TRAINING THAT MAKES SENSE NOW

Training that makes sense, now, and in ten years’ time.
I work with people who care about their health and fitness, but don’t want to train blindly or accept decline as “just aging.”Most of the people I work with are already active. They train regularly, they’ve tried different approaches, and they know effort isn’t the issue. What’s usually missing is clarity around how hard to push, how much to do, and how to make training fit real life without constantly feeling worn down or fragile. That gap between effort and confidence is what my work is built around.

Why I work this way
After almost ten years in the fitness industry coaching, competing, and continuing to train into my fifties I’ve seen the same pattern repeat. People don’t stop training because they’re lazy or unmotivated.
They stop because training stops making sense. Progress stalls. Recovery becomes unpredictable. Niggles creep in. Decisions start to feel risky. And instead of adjusting intelligently, most people are told to either push harder or do less neither of which solves the underlying problem. I don’t believe training should require guesswork, bravery, or constant self-management.I believe it should be understood.

My approach
My coaching is built around one central idea: Capacity you can trust.  That means understanding: what your body can currently handle.  How training stress and recovery interact, how strength, aerobic fitness, and lifestyle constraints fit together and how to progress without constantly needing to pull back or “start again”.
Rather than selling workouts or chasing intensity, I focus on building a structure that holds up over time. Training that supports your life, rather than competing with it.  This is why assessment comes before action, and why ongoing coaching looks after the whole training week not just the hour spent in the gym.

Who this is for
I tend to work best with people who:

  • value competence over appearance
  • want to stay capable, not careful
  • are training 2–4 times per week
  • want fewer flare-ups, not more hero sessions
  • appreciate explanation and context
  • are thinking long-term about their health and performance
If you’re looking for quick fixes, six-week transformations, or workouts without reasoning, this probably isn’t the right place.

Experience & background (brief, by design)
I’m a long-standing personal trainer and CrossFit coach, and a competitive athlete myself, with podium finishes at national level in my age group. I continue to train seriously while managing the same constraints my clients face work, recovery, and longevity.  My coaching is informed by ongoing professional development across strength training, aerobic conditioning, physiology, behaviour change, and performance psychology, as well as practical experience working with adults over 40 who want to keep training well into later life.  More importantly, I’m selective about how and why I apply that knowledge.

How people usually start
Most people begin with a Capacity Audit, a structured assessment designed to remove guesswork and establish a clear baseline.  From there, some choose to continue with Capacity Coaching, where training is managed week-to-week on an ongoing basis. Others use the audit as a one-off reset.  Either way, the goal is the same:
clarity, confidence, and training that actually works.

Final note

I don’t try to work with everyone.
I work with people who want to understand their training, not outsource responsibility for it.
If that sounds like you, the next step is simple.

Start with clarity.

What My Clients Say About Me

I've been training with Steve for the past 5-6 months, and the improvements in my fitness and overall wellness have been significant. Despite having 60% paralysis on my right side and diminished arm muscle functionality following life-saving surgery, I've felt noticeable muscle development in my arms and an overall increase in fitness. Steve has tailored the training program to my personal needs, taking into account my age, my current health issues and my fitness goals. I've made progress, particularly with weights, and can now push my body weight on the leg press. Steve's coaching style has been instrumental in regulating my competitive nature, ensuring I don't push myself too hard. His support has kept me motivated, and I've even looked forward to my gym sessions. Thanks to Steve, I've made some small lifestyle and mindset changes that have kept me coming back to the gym. I highly recommend Steve's training services to anyone over forty; his ability to motivate and personalise training to specific needs is exceptional. I know he genuinely wants me to succeed.

I have been working 1:1 with Steve for a while now as well as attending various classes he runs. As a Mum of two young kids my ambition at the start was to simply get stronger and fitter with a long term mindset. Steve has been a fantastic coach, so much so that not only have I achieved this, but my goals and ambition have grown too along with a genuine love and enthusiasm for fitness. His relaxed and un pressured approach has helped me gain confidence and a belief in myself that I hadn't had in a long time after having kids. I even put myself in a fitness event which I never would've believed I could do a few years ago and loved every second! I don’t believe that would have happened if I hadn't had Steve supporting and coaching me. If you are looking for a PT then you've found them!

Steve is an absolutely brilliant trainer. Incredibly knowledgeable about program design, technique, strength training and endurance building.

He also puts a tonne of time and effort into giving really thoughtful feedback on workouts, which drives improvements.

I can't properly do justice to the effect he's had on my fitness and performance.
